Find IT Training
You're looking to get started in the IT (Information Technology) field or you're looking to expand your current IT skills. You need to find some good IT Training. Unfortunately not all training schools are the same. As a former owner of an IT Training School I'm going to break down what you should look for in an IT school. First Things You’ll Need: A Computer Internet Connection hopeful one that stays up Word or Notpad for notes. I know a pain, but it's worth it. Phone - lot easier than driving their initially. Car to visit your schools Patience - this is a big purchase take your time. The first step is to decide what type of IT training you need. If your new to the industry then a basic computer certification class like A+ or Network+ will be perfect. Don't take just any basic course, especially when you can possibly get a certification out of it. Remember even if you take the class you will have to pass the exam in order to be certified. If your in the IT industry identify the courses that will help you move up in the company or industry. Usually this means higher end certifications like MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, or different certifications like CISA, CISM, etc.. I stress certification courses because you should walk away from training with the ability to have something valuable like a certification. For more certifications check out the links below. So you know which courses you want to take now do a quick Google search in your area for IT Schools that offer training in the certifications you need. Make sure to indicate the certification name & "training" & your location unless you can travel. I also recommend looking at some of the sites listed below such as ComputerTrainingSchools.com. Yes they get paid for sending people to schools, but it does list all the schools in your area. And no I don't get paid by them, but I use to work with them when I had an IT school. You should now have a list of schools in the area, but before you jump in do a little more research. See if you can study for this certification on your own (basically are you motivated enough). some people excel by picking up a book and some test preparation software and just doing it. Others need the structure of having to show up at class every day. Which are you? Check some of the sites below like Brainbuzz.com which has some really neat study guides and information on certifications whether you take a course or do it on your own. If you've decide you need "live training" you have another choice is "live" training face to face training or will online "live" training work for you. A couple things to ask yourself: do you have a quiet place at home to "live" train, and will you do it from home. On the flip side do you have time to drive to face to face training and can you afford it. Typically live face to face training is double the cost of live Internet based training. You decided you wanted face to face instructor training. This narrows your list down to 2-6 schools in your area usually. Of course if you're out in the country you may need look at bootcamps where you fly in for a week or more. Next check out there sites or fill out an inquiry e-mail if you don't have time to surf for long. Your looking to get a feel for the school and if their testimonials are real? What types of training do they offer only IT training or other training, will they be as good at IT training if they offer other training? Once you have 3 schools in mind call them up or e-mail them and ask for pricing information. They will try their hardest to get you to come in and "see" the school hold out a bit. Compare what the different schools sent you and what they offer. Will they help you get a job afterwards, guarantee you'll get certified, were they nice, what was the price like? Finally visit your top 2 choices at least and if you have time top 3 schools. What do the classrooms look like, are they clean and organized? Do you have your own computer to work with or do you have to share one? Did the instructor seem to know what he was talking about? What is the refund policy (each state has different rules for this)? Can you re-take the course or parts of it? Is their a gaurantee you'll pass? The truth is no school can do this, but will they let you re-take the course until you do? The one last thing to check is what type of curriculum do they use? Some of the curriculum sponsored by the vendor like Cisco can be very good. However some vendors curriculum like some Microsoft courses aren't very good. So don't reject a school if they have their own curriculum just ask to see it and then decide. Finally compare price and refund policy. The rest will be up to you. Remember no matter how good the training if you don't study and practice they can't make you get certified. Tips & Warnings > Build a list of sites that talk about certifications. You'll continue getting certified the rest of your career. > Read the vendors web site to learn about the certification > Check out the salary differences for the certifications you want to get. > Read the fine print when you sign up. Especially the refund and re-take policy.

Contributor's Note
I've spent years in the IT field and even owned my own training school for 4 years. So I have a little passion for training. I love to learn things and then share them with others. This has led me to write a wide range of articles and create lot of web sites in subjects from domaining, IT certification, Jewelry stores, to technology like Plasma TV's. Thanks for reading and good luck - mwlucas
